Ladakh Review

Vol 1

Overview

The inaugural volume of Ladakh Review is dedicated to the life, scholarship, and enduring legacy of Alexander Csoma de Kőrös (1784–1842), universally acknowledged as the pioneer of Tibetan studies in the West. Through historical, archival, linguistic, and critical perspectives, the volume situates Csoma’s work firmly within Ladakh and Zanskar, emphasizing the region’s central role in the formation of modern Tibetology.

The contributions collectively argue that Ladakh was not merely a backdrop to Csoma’s studies but an intellectual centre, sustained by Ladakhi scholars, monastic institutions, and cultural traditions that enabled his achievements
